Located in eastern Cyprus, Larnaca International Airport is the largest of the island’s two main international airports. Situated 4km (2.5 miles) south of Larnaca.
Following the closure of the region's Nicosia International Airport, after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, Larnaca Airport was rapidly built and opened at the beginning of the following year. Although facilities were basic, the airport was deemed a success and soon began attracting charter flights, such as Cyprus Airways. In the following years, it became necessary to extend to runway, so that Larnaca Airport was able to accommodatelarger aircrafts.
